                                            TURNING POINTS



  • Mandela was groomed fro becoming local chief in his clan.
  •  Mandela helped found the ANC Youth League,
  • Whilst at university Nelson Mandela became increasingly aware of the unjust nature of South African Society
  • and along with his good friend and comrade Oliver Tambo was expelled from Fort Hare for organising a student strike.
  • Mandela had to resign from the ANC and work underground
  • In the late 50s (56 รข€’61) there was an extremely lengthy Treason Trial in which Mandela and several others were charged with treason.
  • the government banned the ANC .
  • However by 1962 Mandela had been arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment in the notorious Robben Island prison.
  • Although negotiations were painfully slow and difficult, they eventually led to Mandela’s release in 1990. It was an emotional moment watched by millions around the globe

Reg Saunders biographu timeline


  • Reg Saunders born in 1920
  • From 1937, Reg ran a sawmill with his father and brother,
  • In 1940 joined  to fight in the Second World War
  •  Crete was invaded in May 1941
  •  escaped British submarine and returned to Australia in 1942
  • promoted to lieutenant in 1944.
  • married 1944
  • discharged from the army in 1945
  • In 1950 rejoined the army as a lieutenant to fight in the Korean War
  • requested discharge from the army in 1954
  •  recruited to the Office of Aboriginal Affairs in 1969 
  • continued working in Canberra until his retirement in 1980
  •  recognised for his community work in 1971 
  • died in 1990,

  • fred hollows was born in New Zealand in 1929.
  • got job in australin in 1960.
  • in 1965 became head of the  Eye Department at a Sydney hospital.
  • in 1965 accepted a cause and prepared he first Aboriginal Medical Service.
  • helped a national program about  eye disease in Aboriginal Australians in 1970s.
  • + in three years the teams travelled outside australia. 
  • in 1980 travelled all around the universaty. 
  • in 1989 dying in cancer.
  • in 1993 died in cancer.
